KISANGURA FRIENDS SCHOOL (Mugumu)
is a Quaker-affiliated school in Mugumu, on the far side of the
Serengeti National Park from Arusha. Kisangura came to the attention
of Friends of Tanzanian Schools through Eileen Dunne, a Boston-area
Quaker who had contributed funds to help feed orphaned children
at the school. Friends of Tanzanian Schools learned that many of
the children at Kisangura were orphaned by AIDS and were both homeless
and hungry. Friends of Tanzanian Schools also learned that Kisangura
was having difficulty attracting teachers to its remote location
because there was no housing for teachers available. Teaming with
New York City architect James Morgan, who agreed to raise funds
for and supervise construction of teachers’ housing at Kisangura,
Friends of Tanzanian Schools agreed to fund the construction of
one teachers’ house. In 2003, the construction took place.
